What is Risperdal?
Risperdal with the active ingredient risperidone is an atypical antipsychotic medication that works by restoring the balance of certain natural substances in the brain. Autistic children between 5 and 16 years of age can use it to treat aggression and irritability. Adults over 18 years of age can use the medication to treat certain mental or mood disorders such as bipolar disorders or schizophrenia. Some people may also use the medication alone or along with other medication to treat Alzheimer’s dementia or depression.
How is Risperdal used?
Risperdal is usually taken once or twice daily and can be taken with or without food. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s reaction to the medication and the condition being treated. To reduce the risk of side effects, the doctor may prescribe a lower dosage to start and gradually increase to the correct dosage. Do not discontinue the medication without contacting a doctor, even if you feel well, as it may lead to a return of the symptoms and make the illness harder to treat.
Adverse effects
Patients taking Risperdal may notice side effects such as:
- Fatigue
- Headaches
- Weight gain
- Dizziness
- Stomach pain
- Drowsiness
- Vomiting
- Nausea
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Painful erection that last for hours
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Irregular heartbeat
- Tremors
- Confusion
- Anxiety
- Signs of infection
- Seizures
Warnings
The medication may cause a slightly increased risk of side effects when used by older adults with dementia.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Risperdal is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
