What is Ropin?
Ropin containing the active ingredient ropinirole is considered a dopamine agonist type of medication. The drug has some of the same effects of the natural substance dopamine and is used to restore mental balance. The medication is used to treat symptoms of Parkinson’s disease such as tremors, stiffness, slowed movement, balance problem and poor muscle control. Some people may also use it to treat restless legs syndrome (RLS), the condition that causes discomfort in the legs and a strong urge to move the legs.
How is Ropin used?
Ropin is usually taken orally 3 times per day or as directed by a doctor. It is recommended to take the medication with some food along with a glass of water to prevent nausea. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. To decrease the risk of side effects, your health care provider may start you on a low dose and gradually adjust the dosage to the optimal amount. Do not discontinue the treatment without consulting a doctor as the medication may take a few months before the full effects are felt.
Adverse effects
Patients using Ropin may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Headaches
- Sweating or flushing
- Difficulty performing voluntary movements
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Depression
- Muscle cramps or spasms
- Decreased sexual ability or performance
- Frequent or urgent need to urinate
- Irregular heartbeat
- Vision problems
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Ropin is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
