What is Safeheart?
Safeheart (generic name Pimobendan) is a pet medicine used in the treatment of mild, moderate or severe congestive heart failure in dogs. Pimobendan is only suitable for use in cases of heart failure that are caused by atrioventricular valvular insufficiency (AVVI) or dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM).
How is Safeheart used?
Safeheart 5mg is available as a box of 30 tablets. This dosage is best suited to larger dogs. If you havea smaller dog, Safeheart 1.25mg is also available.
Most dogs are prescribed a dosage of 0.23 mg/lb (0.5 mg/kg) body weight daily, given as two divided doses. Using your dogs weight as a guide, you can determine which dosage of tablet will be required to give the correct aprroximate dose (using whole and/or half tablets).
Safeheart comes in a tablet form to be given orally to your dog.
Adverse effects
Safeheart (Pimobendan) can result in some unwanted side effects. You may notice the following in your dog while they are taking Safeheart:
- lack of appetite
- lethargy
- diarrhea
- dyspnea
- azotemia
- weakness and ataxia
- pleural effusion
- syncope
- cough
- sudden death
- ascites
- heart murmur
Warnings
Safeheart (Pimobendan) is only indicated for specific cases of congestive heart failure. Only use Safeheart if it has been clinically show thet the heart failure was dues to:
- atrioventricular valvular insufficiency (AVVI) or
- dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM)
Pimobendan may not be suitable for use in:
- dogs under 6 months old
- dogs with diabetes mellitus
- pregnant or lactating dogs
- dogs with heart conditions not resulting from atrioventricular valvular insufficiency (AVVI) or dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM)
Safeheart (Pimobendan) is contraindicated in cases of
- hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
- aortic stenosis
- any other clinical condition where an augmentation of cardiac output is inappropriate for functional or anatomical reasons.
Safeheart is not suitable for human consumption. It is a pet medicine to be given to dogs only.
