What is Safeheart?
Safeheart (Pimobendan) can help treat dogs with mild, moderate or severe congestive heart failure resulting from atrioventricular valvular insufficiency (AVVI) or dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Pimobendan has a vasodilatory effect.
How is Safeheart used?
Safeheart 1.25mg comes in a packet of 30 tablets. It is more suitable for smaller dogs. For larger dogs, Safeheart 5mg is available.
Safeheart is a oral tablet.
A dosage of 0.23 mg/lb (0.5 mg/kg) body weight daily is comonly prescribed. This daily dosage is usually split into two smaller dosages to be given approximately 12 hours apart.
Adverse effects
Possible side effects your dog may experience while taking Safeheart (Pimobendan) include:
- lack of appetite
- lethargy
- diarrhea
- dyspnea
- azotemia
- weakness and ataxia
- pleural effusion
- syncope
- cough
- sudden death
- ascites
- heart murmur
Warnings
The safety of Safeheart in heart failure not caused by atrioventricular valvular insufficiency (AVVI) or dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) has not been established. Only use Pimobendan when the underlying cause of the heart failure has been clinically disgnosed as atrioventricular valvular insufficiency (AVVI) or dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM).
Do not give Pimobendan to dogs younger than 6 months.
Do not give Pimobendan to dogs with diabetes mellitus.
Do not give Pimobendan to pregnant or lactating dogs.
Do not used Safeheart (Pimobendan) in cases of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, aortic stenosis, or any other clinical condition where an augmentation of cardiac output is inappropriate for functional or anatomical reasons.
Safeheart is suitable for use in dogs only. Do not give to other pets. Pimobendan must not be taken by humans.
