What is Salazopyrin?
Salazopyrin containing the active ingredient sulfasalazine is considered an aminosalicylates type of medication. The medication can be used to reduce inflammation in inflammatory bowel diseases and rheumatoid arthritis. By blocking the way inflammation develops in the body, the tablets can be used to treat symptoms such as fevers, stomach pain, diarrhea and rectal pain caused by conditions such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Some patients may also use the medication, when other types of medication have proven ineffective, to reduce stiffness, swelling and joint pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis.
How is Salazopyrin used?
Salazopyrin is usually taken orally 1 to 4 times per day unless otherwise directed by a doctor. To prevent an upset stomach, the medication should be taken with some food along with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the therapy. The tablets should be swallowed whole and not broken, chewed or crushed prior to consumption.

Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Salazopyrin is not always suitable for all patients.
