What is Selgin?
Selgin containing the active ingredient selegiline is considered a selective monoamine-oxidase-B inhibitor type of medication. It works by increasing the amount of the natural substance dopamine in the brain and preventing its breakdown to help restore mental balance. The medication can be used alone or along with other medicines to help control symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD) such as tremors, muscle stiffness, loss of normal movement and slow movement.
How is Selgin used?
Selgin is usually taken orally 1 to 2 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The tablets should be taken with breakfast and lunch along with a glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting a doctor as abruptly stopping the medication can cause harmful side effects.
Adverse effects
Patients using Selgin may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Dry mouth
- Nausea
- Upset stomach
- Insomnia
- Vomiting
- inflammation of the lining of the mouth
- Headaches
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persists or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Mental or mood changes
- Painful or difficult urination
- Decreased sex drive or ability
- Unusual weight gain
- Irregular heartbeat
- Hallucinations
- Muscle or joint pain
- Blurred vision
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Selgin is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
