What is Selincro?
Selincro containing the active ingredient nalmefene is considered an opioid receptor antagonist type of medication. The medication is a long term treatment to help people dependent on alcohol to reduce their alcohol consumption and their dependence on the substance. It helps reduce cravings for alcohol by reducing the psychological rewards from drinking. It should be used with other types of treatments and social and psychological support to slowly ease off alcohol.
How is Selincro used?
Selincro is taken on an “as needed” basis 1 to 2 hours prior to anticipating drinking alcohol, when you have an urge to drink alcohol or as soon as you can after starting to drink alcohol. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient's condition and their response to the therapy. The tablets should be swallowed whole and not crushed, split or chewed prior to consumption. The recommended maximum dosage in 24 hours should be 1 tablet.
