What is Serenace?
Serenace containing the active ingredient haloperidol belongs to a class of medications called conventional antipsychotics. The medication works by blocking a variety of receptors in the brain to decrease abnormal excitement in the brain. It is used to relieve symptoms such as disturbed thoughts, feelings and behavior in various mental conditions such as schizophrenia and mania. Some patients with Tourette’s syndrome may also use the drug to control their motor and verbal tics.
How is Serenace used?
Serenace is usually taken orally 2 to 3 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the therapy. Do not discontinue the treatment without consulting a doctor as abruptly stopping the medication may cause a relapse in the patient’s condition.
Adverse effects
Patients using Serenace may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Difficulty urinating
- Dry mouth
- Headaches
- Upset stomach
- Insomnia
- Agitation
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persists or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Visual disturbances
- Irregular heartbeat
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Decreased sex drive or performance
- Seizures
- Restless muscle movements in eyes, tongue, jaw or neck
- Jaundice
- Chest pain
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Serenace is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
