What is Seroquel?
Seroquel containing the active ingredient quetiapine is considered an atypical antipsychotics type of medication. It works by changing the activity of certain natural substances in the brain (neurotransmitters) to restore mental balance. The medication can be used to treat schizophrenia, a mental illness that causes disturbed or unusual thinking, loss of interest in life and strong inappropriate emotions. It can also be used along with other medications to treat episodes of mania and depression in patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
How is Seroquel used?
Seroquel is usually taken orally 1 to 3 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the therapy. To reduce the risk of side effects, your health care provider may start you on a low dose and gradually increase the dosage to the optimal dose. The tablets should be swallowed whole and not broken, chewed or crushed prior to consumption as it may cause too much of the drug from being released at once.
