What is Seroquel?
Seroquel works by changing the activity of certain natural substances in the brain (neurotransmitters) to restore mental balance. The active ingredient quetiapine belongs to a class of medications called atypical antipsychotics. The medication can be used to treat symptoms such as loss of interest in life, strong inappropriate emotions and disturbed or unusual thinking caused by a mental illness called schizophrenia. It can also be used alone or along with other drugs to treat episodes of depression and mania in patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
How is Seroquel used?
Seroquel should only be used as directed by a doctor, usually 1 to 3 times per day. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. The tablets should be swallowed whole and not chewed, crushed or broken prior to consumption as it may cause too much of the drug from being released at one time. To reduce the risks of side effects, the health care provider may start you on a low dose and gradually increase the dose to the optimal dosage.
Adverse effects
Seroquel may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Vomiting
- Headaches
- Constipation
- Dry mouth
- Increased appetite or excessive weight plan
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Upset stomach
- Drowsiness
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Jaundice
- Signs of infection
- Weakness or loss of strength
- Vision problems
- Seizures
- Fainting
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Seroquel is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
