What is Seroquel?
Seroquel is mainly prescribed to treat schizophrenia and symptoms that come along with the condition such as disturbed or unusual thoughts, strong inappropriate emotions and loss of interest in life. The active ingredient quetiapine is considered an atypical antipsychotic type of medication that works by changing the activity of certain natural substance in the brain (neurotransmitters) to restore mental balance. Patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder may also use the drug alone or along with other medications to treat episodes of mania and depression.
How is Seroquel used?
Seroquel should only be used as directed by a doctor, usually 1 to 3 times per day. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with plenty of water. Contact a doctor for the correct length of treatment and dosage as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the therapy. To reduce the side effects of the medication, your health care provider may prescribe a low starting dose and gradually increasing the dosage. The tablets should be swallowed whole and not broken, crushed or chewed to prevent too much of the drug from being released at one time.
Adverse effects
Patients using Seroquel may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Dry mouth
- Increased appetite or excessive weight gain
- Constipation
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Headaches
- Upset stomach
- Vomiting
- Drowsiness
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Weakness or loss of strength
- Vision problems
- Signs of infection
- Seizures
- Jaundice
- Fainting
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Seroquel is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
