What is Sertima-100?
Sertima containing the active ingredient sertraline is considered a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) type of antidepressants. It works by preventing the natural substance serotonin from being reabsorbed back into the nerve cells to help prolong the mood lightening affect and restore mental balance. The medication can be used to treat neurological conditions such as depression, panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), social anxiety disorder, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
How is Sertima-100 used?
Sertima is usually taken orally once per day in the morning or evening unless otherwise directed by a doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken along with a glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient's response to the therapy. To reduce the risk of side effects, your health care provider may start you on a low dose and slowly increase your dose to the optimal dosage.
Adverse effects
Patients using Sertima may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Insomnia
- Change in appetite or weight
- Vomiting
- Excessive sweating
- Changes in sex drive or ability
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persists or worsen.
Warnings
Do not discontinue the treatment without consulting a doctor, even if you feel well, as abruptly stopping the medication can cause severe withdrawal symptoms.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Sertima-100 is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
