What is Simplicef?
Simplicef containing the active ingredient cefpodoxime is considered a cephalosporin antibiotics type of medication designed for dogs. The medication is a broad spectrum antibiotic that works against gram positive and gram negative bacteria to suppress the growth of micro organisms such as fungi, bacteria and protozoa. The tablets can be given to dogs to treat conditions such as pneumonia or bronchitis as well as infections to the skin, urinary tract and ear.
How is Simplicef used?
Simplicef is usually given to the pet orally once per day for 5 to 7 days unless otherwise directed by a veterinarian. The tablets can be fed to the pet on an empty stomach or hidden in their pet food for self consumption. Contact a veterinarian for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the pet's weight, condition and their response to the therapy. The recommended dosage for dogs is usually 5 to 10mg/kg of the pet's weight. Always complete the prescribed course of treatment as prematurely stopping the treatment may cause the bacteria to return and become immune to the antibiotic.
Adverse effects
Pets given Simplicef may encounter minor side effects such as:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Decreased appetite
- Increased thirst
Contact a veterinarian immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to the veterinarian if your pet suffers an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Simplicef is not always suitable for all animals. Always consult your veterinarian prior to using this medication if your pet is pregnant, breastfeeding, breeding, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if it has any allergies or other health problems.
