What is Sinemet?
Sinemet is a combination medication containing the active ingredients carbidopa and levodopa commonly called co-careldopa. Carbidopa works by assisting levodopa reach the brain before taking effect and not broken down before reaching the brain. Levodopa works by converting into dopamine to help restore mental balance and allow normal functioning of the body. The tablets are prescribed to improve symptoms such as poor muscle control, tremors, muscle spasms and stiffness caused by Parkinson’s disease.
How is Sinemet used?
Sinemet should only be taken as directed by a doctor, usually 3 to 4 times per day. The medication can be taken with or without food but should not be taken after a large meal. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. Do not discontinue the treatment without consulting the doctor, even if you feel better, as abruptly stopping the medication may cause symptoms to worsen.
Adverse effects
Sinemet may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Worsening of involuntary movements or spasms
- Sleep disturbances
- Mental or mood changes
- Loss of appetite
- Headaches
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Dizziness
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Sinemet is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
