What is Sinemet?
Sinemet containing the 2 active ingredients carbidopa and levodopa is sometimes known as co-careldopa. The combination medication is used to treat symptoms of Parkinson’s disease such as muscle stiffness, spasms, tremors and poor muscle control. Carbidopa functions to help prevent the breakdown of levodopa before it reaches the brain and take effect. Levodopa works by converting into dopamine in the brain to help restore mental balance and allow normal functioning of the body.
How is Sinemet used?
Sinemet is usually taken orally 3 to 4 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food but it is not recommended to take it after a large meal. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. Do not discontinue the treatment without consulting a doctor, even if symptoms seem better, as abruptly stopping the medication may cause symptoms to worsen.
Adverse effects
Patients using Sinemet may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Headaches
- Loss of appetite
- Mental or mood changes
- Sleep disturbances
- Worsening of involuntary movements or spasms
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Sinemet is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
