What is Singulair?
Singulair with the active ingredient montelukast sodium is considered a leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA). It blocks the action of leukotrienes, a chemical released from the lungs in people with asthma which cause inflammation and increased mucus production in the airways. Leukotrienes will also cause the linings in the airways to contract and narrow. The tablets can prevent coughing, chest tightness, breathing difficulty and wheezing caused by asthma or allergic rhinitis. Some people may also use the medication to prevent bronchospasms caused by exercising.
How is Singulair used?
Singulair should be taken orally once daily or as directed by a doctor. The tablets can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a full glass of water to prevent an upset stomach. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient's condition and their reaction to the medication. For patients using the medication to prevent bronchospasms from exercising, the tablet should be taken 2 hours before you exercise. Patients using the medication before exercising should not take any additional dose within 24 hours. The treatment is a long term preventative and should not be stopped without consulting a doctor as it may cause the symptoms to worsen.
Adverse effects
Patients using Singulair may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Headaches
- Upset stomach
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Fatigue
- Heartburn
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Mental or mood changes
- Insomnia
- Hallucinations
- Tremors
- Worsening asthma symptoms
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Pins and needles or numbness in arms or legs
- Sinus pain
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Singulair is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
