What is Sodium Ascorbate Solution?
Sodium Ascorbate Solution contains Ascorbic Acid or Vitamin C in a solution suitable for injection. It is a higher-dose than oral vitamin C and is used in the prevention or treatment of low levels of vitamin C. Some cases of low vitamin C cannot be treated by oral tablets because the deficiency is too large or they cannot uptake enough vitamin C. Low levels of vitamin C can cause rash, muscle weakness, joint pain, tiredness, or tooth loss. Sodium Ascorbate is also used in other situations and is recently being used in some countries as a cancer drug.
How is Sodium Ascorbate Solution used?
Sodium Ascorbate is a liquid injectible form of ascorbic acid. It comes in a vial with 30g of Sodium Ascorbate in water. The dosage you will require can vary depending to the condition being treated and how well you respond to the medicine. Your doctor should tell you how much sodium ascorbate to take, when to take sodium ascorbate and how to take sodium ascorbate. Medical staff will generally perform the injections in a clinical environment. If you are receiving the injections at home, mak sure the person giving the injection has been shown how to safely perform injections.
Adverse effects
Some side effects can occur while taking sodium ascorbate, but sever side effects are rare.
The most common side effects of sodium acscorbate are:
- diarrhea
- nausea
- vomiting
- abdominal cramps/pain
- heartburn
If any of these side effects are bothering you, or if they become worse over time, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
If you notice painful urination or pink/bloody urine, contact your doctor immediately.
Allergic reactions to sodium ascorbate are rare. If you notice any of these signs or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, notify your doctor right away:
- rash
- itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat)
- severe dizziness
- trouble breathing
Other side effects are also possible. If you notice other side effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Warnings
Before starting treatment with sodium ascorbate tell your doctor about:
- any allergies you have
- any medicines you are currently taking (especially alcohol, amphetamine, anti-depressants, aspirin, barbiturates, primidone, any other sedatives, desferrioxamine, dicoumarol, ethinyloestradiol, fluphenazine, oral iron supplements, isoprenaline, mexiletine, warfarin)
- any medical conditions you have, especially kidney disease (including kidney stones) or G6PD deficiency
- if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
