What is Soloxine?
Soloxine containing the active ingredient levothyroxine sodium should be given to dogs which do not produce adequate amounts of the hormone naturally. The tablets work by stimulating the metabolism, growth, development and differentiation of tissues. It should be used to treat symptoms such as weight gain, weakness, lethargy, anemia, inactivity, hyperlipidemia and endocrine alopecia, all conditions caused by hypothyroidism.
How is Soloxine used?
Soloxine should be given to the pet 1 to 2 times daily or as directed by a veterinarian. The tablets can be fed directly to the pet or hidden in their food for self consumption. Contact a veterinarian for the correct dosage as it will depend on the pet's condition, weight and their response to the therapy. The recommended dosage is 0.1mg for every 10lbs of bodyweight of the pet. The veterinarian may request frequent checkups as the dosage may need to be adjusted every few weeks until a sufficient maintenance dose is established.
Adverse effects
Soloxine may cause minor side effects in the pet such as:
- Dizziness
- Personality changes
- Weight changes
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Sleep problems
- Loss of appetite
Contact a veterinarian immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
