What is Spectra 25?
Spectra 25 is classified as a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) type of medication that acts on nerve cells in the brain. The active ingredient doxepin works by increasing the amount of certain natural chemicals in the brain to restore mental balance. It is used to treat symptoms of depression or anxiety associated with alcoholism, manic depressive conditions and psychiatric conditions.
How is Spectra 25 used?
Spectra 25 is usually taken orally 1 to 3 times daily or as directed by a doctor. If you are only required to consume the medication once daily, it is recommended to take it before bedtime to prevent daytime sleepiness. The dose will depend on the patient’s condition and their reaction to the medication, contact a doctor for the correct dosage. It may take between 2 to 4 weeks for the full effects of the medication to be felt, do not stop the treatment thinking it is not helping.
Adverse effects
Spectra 25 may cause side effects in patients such as:
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
- Dry mouth
- Constipation
- Blurred vision
- Lack of coordination
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
Consult a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Decreased sex drive or performance
- Irregular heartbeat
- Confusion
- Hallucinations
- Seizures
- Fainting
- Tremors
- Difficulty passing urine
Warnings
The medication should not be taken in combination with any monoamine oxidase inhibitor antidepressant (MAOI) as it may cause a drug interaction. Treatment should not be started until 2 weeks after stopping any MAOI.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Spectra 25 is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
