What is Spiractin?
Spiractin works by blocking the actions of the natural hormone aldosterone, which acts on the kidneys to regulate water and sodium levels in the body. The active ingredient spironolactone belongs to a class of medications called potassium-sparing diuretics (water tablets). The medication can be used to treat oedema in patients with certain conditions such as liver diseases, congestive heart failure and kidney problems by eliminating excess salt and water from the body into the urine but reducing the loss of potassium. The tablets can also be used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), which can assist in preventing strokes and heart attacks.
How is Spiractin used?
Spiractin should be taken orally as directed by a doctor, usually 1 to 2 times per day. The tablets should be taken with some food along with a glass of milk or water to prevent an upset stomach. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. The patient should take the medication before 6pm to prevent waking up in the middle of the night to urinate. Do not discontinue the treatment without consulting a doctor, even if the patient feels well, as hypertension usually has no visible symptoms.
