What is Spiractin?
Spiractin containing the active ingredient spironolactone is considered a potassium-sparing diuretic (water tablets) type of medication. The medication works by blocking the actions of the hormone aldosterone, which acts on the kidneys to regulate salt and water levels in the body. It can be used to treat oedema in patients with conditions such as congestive heart failure, liver disease and kidney problems by eliminating excess water and sodium from the body into the urine but reducing the loss of potassium. The tablets can also be used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) to prevent strokes, heart attacks and kidney problems.
How is Spiractin used?
Spiractin is usually taken orally 1 to 2 times per day or as directed by a doctor. To prevent an upset stomach, take the medication with some food along with a glass of milk or water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. It is recommended to take the tablets before 6pm to prevent waking up in the middle of the night to urinate. Continue taking the medication even if you feel well as high blood pressure often has no visible symptoms.
