What is Stablon?
Stablon containing the active ingredient tianeptine is considered a selective serotonin reuptake enhancer (SSRE). It has the opposite actions of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) as it reduces the effects of serotonin in the limbic system giving rise to a mood elevation. The drug will become effective faster than any SSRI type of medication. Unlike any SSRI’s, the medication usually has less side effects that come with an antidepressant type of drug. It is mainly prescribed to treat major depression disorders, anxiety disorders and panic disorders.
How is Stablon used?
Stablon should be taken orally as prescribed by a doctor, usually 3 times daily due to its short duration of action. It should be taken before a meal along with a glass of water to prevent an upset stomach. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the therapy. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting a doctor as it could lead to severe withdrawal symptoms.
Adverse effects
Stablon may cause side effects in patients such as:
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Dry mouth
- Fatigue
- Constipation
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Abdominal pain
- Muscle or joint pain
- Vertigo
- Tremors
- Anorexia
- Hallucinations
- Fainting
Warnings
Patients should leave a 2 week interval between taking any monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) and the medication as it may cause a severe drug interaction.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Stablon is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
