What is Stugeron?
Stugeron containing the active ingredient cinnarizine is an antihistamine used to prevent and treat motion sickness. It works by blocking histamine and other receptors in the brain to prevent disturbances in the middle ear from activating the vomiting centre and causing nausea, vertigo or vomiting. Some patients may also use the medication to treat tinnitus associated with Meniere's disease and other middle ear disorders.
How is Stugeron used?
Stugeron is usually taken 2 hours prior to travel or as directed by a doctor. If needed, additional doses can be taken every 8 hours. To prevent an upset stomach the tablets should be taken with or just after a meal along with some water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient's condition and their response to the medication.
Adverse effects
Patients using Stugeron may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Drowsiness
- Upset stomach
- Headaches
- Dry mouth
- Increased sweating
- Weight gain
- Jaundice
- Depression
- Loss of coordination
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Stugeron is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
