What is Targretin?
Targretin is used in the treatment of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma or CTCL, a cancer that causes lesions to appear on the skin. It is known as a retinoid and it works by preventing the growth of cancerous tumor cells. This medication is usually administered to patients when treatment with at least one other drug has proven unsuccessful.

How is Targretin used?
Targretin capsules are taken orally, with food, or shortly after eating. The correct dosage may vary depending on the patient's condition and other factors such as health and previous treatment history, however it is normal for adult patients to be prescribed one capsule per day. Many weeks may pass before the positive benefits are noticed, and patients are advised not to discontinue treatment before consulting their health care provider and discussing the results.
Adverse effects
There are certain adverse effects which have been linked to Targretin. These include:
- Nausea
- Headaches
- Weakness
- Fatigue
- Difficulty sleeping
- Weight gain
- Hair loss
- Muscle pains
- Swollen limbs
- Dry or itchy skin
- An increased sensitivity to cold
This medication may cause thyroid problems or an increase in triglycerides in the blood. Your health care provider will regularly monitor your condition to ensure they these adverse effects are discovered and dealt with quickly. You should see your health care provider immediately if any adverse effects persist or worsen, or if you notice other more serious side effects such as persistent back pain, sudden stomach pain, fever or any changes in vision.
Warnings
Due to the fact that Targretin has been shown to cause birth defects, it should never be taken by pregnant women or by those who may be planning to conceive. Female patients should undergo a pregnancy test one month prior to treatment with this medication, during treatment, and one month after treatment has ceased. Two effective forms of contraception should be used over the same time range, one of which being a barrier method contraceptive such as condoms. Male patients being treated with this medication should also take precautions and always wear condoms during treatment and for at least one month afterwards.
It is important not to eat grapefruit or consume any grapefruit containing products while taking this medication, as it has the potential to increase the potency of the medication to levels which are no longer safe.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Targretin is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
