What is Temaril-P?
Temaril-P is a combination medication containing the active ingredients trimeprazine and prednisolone. The tablets contain an antihistamine and anti-inflammatory medication to reduce the itchiness caused by an allergic reaction and a corticosteroid used to reduce inflammation of the skin and respiratory system. The medication is generally used to treat bronchitis, coughing (including kennel cough), bacterial infections, eczema and to minimize scratching due to itching skin.
How is Temaril-P used?
Temaril-P is usually given to the pet orally twice per day or as directed by a veterinarian. To reduce the risk of side effects, the tablets should be given to the pet along with some food. Contact a veterinarian for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the pet’s weight, condition and their response to the therapy. The recommended dosage is half a tablet for dogs up to 10lbs, 1 tablet for dogs between 10 to 20lbs, 2 tablets for dogs between 21 to 40lbs and 3 tablets twice daily for dogs over 40lbs. The dosage is usually reduced by half after the first 4 days of treatment. Do not discontinue the treatment without completing the prescribed amount as it may allow the condition to return and become immune to the medication.
Adverse effects
Pets given Temaril-P may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Sedation
- Tremors
- Weakness
- Restlessness
- Behavior changes
Contact a veterinarian immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to the veterinarian if your pet suffers an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Temaril-P is not always suitable for all animals. Always consult your veterinarian prior to using this medication if your pet is pregnant, breastfeeding, breeding, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if it has any allergies or other health problems.
