What is Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment?
Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment containing the active ingredient oxytetracycline is considered a broad spectrum antibacterial ointment. The medication is effective in treating both gram positive and gram negative organisms causing infections in cats, dogs, horses, sheep and cattle. The ointment can be used to treat eye conditions such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, pink eye, corneal ulcer and blepharitis. Some people may also use it to treat chlamydia eye infections in cats and secondary complications of distemper in dogs.
How is Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment used?
Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment is usually applied topically 2 to 4 times per day unless otherwise directed by a veterinarian. A thin film of the ointment should be applied to the inside of the lower eyelid then gently hold the eyelids shut and massage to disperse the medication. Contact a veterinarian for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the pet’s condition and their response to the therapy. If the pet requires additional medication to the same eye, wait at least 10 minutes prior to the next application.
Adverse effects
Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment is generally very well tolerated with minimal side effects. Contact a veterinarian immediately should you notice any unusual or bothersome symptoms with the pet.
