What is Tetrabenzine Xenazine?
Xenazine containing the active ingredient tetrabenazine is considered a monoamine depletors type of medication. It works by decreasing certain neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine within the nerve cells in the brain. Depleting the brain cells of the neurotransmitters can help stop the nerve cells from sending inappropriate messages to the muscles and control jerky, irregular and uncontrollable movements (chorea) caused by Huntington’s disease.
How is Tetrabenzine Xenazine used?
Xenazine is usually taken orally 1 to 3 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. Your health care provider may start you on a lower dose while gradually adjusting the dosage. The recommended maximum dose is 25mg taken in a single dose.
Adverse effects
Patients using Xenazine may encounter unwanted side effects such as:

- Feeling anxious or confused

Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Tetrabenzine Xenazine is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
