What is Thyforon?
Thyforon (Levothyroxine Sodium) is used to treat dogs with hypothyroidism.
How is Thyforon used?
Thyforon (Levothyroxine Sodium) is usually prescribed at a starting dose of 0.1mg (10mcg) per kg of the dog's body weight every 12 hours. This dosage may be adjusted up or down during treatment until a clinical improvement is reached. Only give your dog the dosage prescribed by your vet and only change this dosage on their instruction. Required dosages will differ between dogs depending on individual characteristics of the dog and the severity of hypothyroidism.
Adverse effects
Symptoms of osteoarthritis may worsen due to use of Levothyroxine Sodium.
Most other side effects will be similar to the symptoms of hyperthyroidism, and may indicate a dosage adjustment is necessary.
Warnings
There are many drugs that negatively interact with Levothyroxine Sodium. These include barbiturates, antacids, anabolic steroids, diazepam, furosemide, mitotane, phenylbutazone, phenytoin, propranolol, salicylates and sulphonamides, oestrogens, ketamine, catecholamines or sympaticomimetics and digitalis. Tell your vet of all treatments your dog is currently taking.
Tell you vet if your dog has or has had hypoadrenocorticism in the past. This can lead to thyrotoxicosis. If your dog has heart problems there is an increased risk of congestive heart failure when taking Thyforon.
If your dog has uncorrected adrenal insufficiency, Thyforon (Levothyroxine Sodium) should not be given.
