What is Tilstigmin?
Tilstigmin containing the active ingredient neostigmin is considered an anticholinesterase type of medication. The medication is used to treat Myasthenia Gravis, an autoimmune disorder and neuromuscular condition which causes fatigue and weak muscles. It is proven to alleviate these symptoms by preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine, the natural substance required for normal muscle function.
How is Tilstigmin used?
Patients taking Tilstigmin are usually prescribed 15mg as a starting dose taken orally every 3 or 4 hours. To decrease the risk of side effects, it is recommended to take the tablets with some food or a glass of milk. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient's condition and their response to the therapy. The maximum dose in any 24 hour period is 300mg. Attend all scheduled check-up appointments so your health care can check if this medication continues to be safe for your use and if the dosage needs to be adjusted in accordance with your progress.
Adverse effects
Adverse effects which have been reported by patients who have taken Tilstigmin include:
- Diarrhea
- Increased perspiration
- Muscle cramps
- Weakness
- Changes in blood pressure
A serious but very rare adverse effect when using this medication is the development of anaphylaxis. If left untreated, this condition has the potential to be severe or even fatal.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Tilstigmin is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
