The active ingredient imipramine hydrochloride is classified as a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA). It may help improve the energy levels, appetite, sleep and mood in patients. It is mainly prescribed to treat certain types of chronic pain, panic disorders, anxiety disorders and major depressive disorders. Some people may also use the medication to treat nighttime bed wetting with children.
How is Tofranil used?
Tofranil is usually taken 1 to 4 times daily or as directed by a doctor. The tablets should be taken with plenty of water and can be taken with or without food. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s reaction to the medication and the condition being treated. The patient may not feel the full effects of the medication immediately as the treatment may take up to 3 weeks to be felt.
