What is Topamax?
Topamax containing the active ingredient topiramate is considered an anticonvulsant or anti-epileptic type of medication. It works by reducing abnormal excitement in the brain to help restore mental balance. The medication can be used alone or in combination with other drugs to treat certain types of seizures in patients suffering from epilepsy. Some people may also use the tablets to prevent migraine headaches and decrease the frequency of attacks.
How is Topamax used?
Topamax is generally taken orally twice per day, once in the morning and once in the evening unless otherwise directed by a doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with plenty of water throughout the duration of the treatment. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient's condition and their response to the therapy. The tablets should be swallowed whole and not broken, crushed or chewed as it has a bitter taste to it.

Patients using Topamax may encounter unwanted side effects such as:

Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Topamax is not always suitable for all patients.
