What is Trajenta?
Trajenta is a dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitor (DPP-4) that works by increasing incretin levels and the amount of insulin released in the body, while decreasing the amount of sugar produced by the body. Along with a regular exercise regime and diet plan, the medication can be used to control high blood sugar levels in the body. Controlling high blood sugar levels can help prevent nerve problems, vision problems, kidney damage and even reduce risk of limb loss, heart attacks or strokes.
How is Trajenta used?
Trajenta is usually taken orally one tablet once per day unless otherwise directed by a doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a glass of water. Dosage will depend on the patient's age, weight, condition and reaction to the medication. It is not recommended to take more or less than the prescribed amount, contact a doctor for the correct dosage.
Adverse effects
Patients taking Trajenta may encounter side effects such as:
- Nausea or vomiting
- Headache
- Cough
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Back pain
- Muscle or joint pain
- Loss of appetite
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Pancreatitis
- Irregular heartbeat
- Blurred vision
- Tingling in hands or feet
- Swelling of the face, tongue, throat or lips
Warnings
The medication should only be used by patients with type 2 diabetes. It should never be used by patients with type 1 diabetes.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Trajenta is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
