What is Triflucan?
Triflucan with the active ingredient fluconazole belongs to a class of medication called triazole antifungals. The medication works by slowing the growth of fungi and killing the fungi by interfering with their cell membranes. It is used to treat a variety of infections to the skin, mouth or vagina. Some people also use the drug to prevent fungal infection if they have a weakened immune system caused by cancer treatment, bone marrow transplant or suffer from diseases such as AIDS.
How is Triflucan used?
Triflucan is usually taken orally once daily or as directed by a doctor. The capsules can be taken with or without food but should be taken with plenty of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the therapy. Do not discontinue the treatment without consulting a doctor as prematurely stopping the treatment may cause the infection to return after a short time.
Adverse effects
Patients using Triflucan may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Upset stomach
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Unpleasant taste in mouth
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Seizures
- Irregular heartbeat
- Fainting
- Fatigue
- Jaundice
- Flu like symptoms
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Triflucan is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
