What is Trisul?
Trisul is a combination of 2 antibiotics called trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole. It is considered a sulfonamide antibiotic that is used to eliminate certain bacteria in the body. The medication can be used to treat various infections to the urinary tract, intestinal tract, ear and lungs. The tablets can be used to treat bacterial infections but cannot be used to treat viral infections such as the flu or common cold.
How is Trisul used?
Trisul is usually taken 2 to 4 times per day or as directed by a doctor. To prevent an upset stomach, take the tablets along with a meal or a glass of milk. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the therapy. Continue taking the medication until the prescribed dosage is complete, even if symptoms appear to have healed, as abruptly stopping the treatment may allow the infection to return and cause the bacteria to become harder to treat.
Adverse effects
Patients using Trisul may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Loss of appetite
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Seizures
- Jaundice
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
The medication should not be used in children below 2 months of age due the risk of serious side effects.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Trisul is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
