What is Vagifem?
Vagifem with the active ingredient estradiol is a man made female sex hormone that regulates many processes in the body. Women will gradually produce less and less estrogen in the period up to menopause which can cause vaginal dryness, itching and inflammation. Raising the levels of estrogen in the body can decrease the chance of vaginal or urinary infections as well as painful or uncomfortable sex.
How is Vagifem used?
The Vagifem tablet should be inserted into the vagina directly and should not be taken orally. It is usually applied once per day or as directed by a doctor. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the medication. To apply the tablet, hold the applicator with one hand and guide the applicator into the vaginal opening as far as is comfortable. Do not force the applicator or insert more than half of the applicator into the vagina. Gently press the plunger until you hear a click. If the tablet falls out, do not replace it and use a fresh applicator to apply a new tablet. The applicator is a single use device and should be never be reused.
Adverse effects
Patients using Vagifem may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Bloating
- Diarrhea
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Breast swelling or tenderness
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Mental or mood changes
- Jaundice
- Unusual vaginal bleeding
- Tremors
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Breast lumps
- Severe abdominal pain
- Blood clots
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Vagifem is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
