What is Valcivir-500?
Valcivir works by slowing the growth and spread of the herpes virus to allow the immune system to treat the infection. The active ingredient valacyclovir belongs to a class of medication called antivirals. The tablets can be used to treat conditions caused by varicella zoster, herpes zoster and herpes simplex such as chickenpox, shingles, cold sores and genital herpes. It can be used to relieve itching and pain, helps sores heal and prevent new ones from forming but cannot be used to cure herpes infections.
How is Valcivir-500 used?
Valcivir should be taken at the first sign of an outbreak, usually 2 to 3 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The tablets should be taken with plenty of water throughout the duration of the treatment but can be taken with or without food. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the therapy.
Adverse effects
Valcivir may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Drowsiness
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Upset stomach
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Nausea
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Seizures
- Vision changes
- Irregular heartbeat
- Hallucinations
- Confusion
- Bloody urine
- Jaundice
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Valcivir-500 is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
