What is Valtrex?
Valtrex containing the active ingredient valacyclovir is classified as an antiviral drug. It works by stopping the herpes virus from reproducing and spreading in the body. It is used to treat certain infections such as cold sores, chickenpox, shingles and genital herpes. It helps sores heal faster, keep new sores from forming, decreases pain and itching but cannot be used as a cure for the viruses in the body.
How is Valtrex used?
Valtrex should be taken as soon as possible after the first appearance of symptoms. It can be taken with or without food but should be swallowed with plenty of fluids to decrease the chance of side effects. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient's response to the medication. The treatment works best when the amount of medication in the body is kept at a constant level so the drug should be taken in evenly spaced intervals. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting a doctor as prematurely stopping the medication may cause the condition to return.
