What is Vasotop?
Vasotop containing the active ingredient ramipril is considered an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor type of medication. The medication can be used alone or along with diuretics or cardiac glycosides in the management of congestive heart failure (NYHA decompensation grades II-IV) in dogs. It works by easing the load on the heart and reversing some of the damage caused by heart failure. Studies have also shown using the medication can reduce the mortality rate in pets with persistent or transient heart failure following an acute myocardial infarction.
How is Vasotop used?
Vasotop is usually given to the pet once per day or as directed by a veterinarian. The medication should be given directly or hidden in pet food to be consumed with a meal. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the pet’s weight, condition being treated and their response to the treatment. The tablets are scored to make dividing them easier.
Adverse effects
Pets using Vasotop may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Anorexia
- Low blood pressure
- Lethargy
Contact a veterinarian immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to the veterinarian if your pet suffers an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Vasotop is not always suitable for all animals. Always consult your veterinarian prior to using this medication if your pet is pregnant, breastfeeding, breeding, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if it has any allergies or other health problems.
