What is Ventolin Inhaler?
Ventolin belongs to a class of medication known as bronchodilators. The active ingredient salbutamol works by opening the breathing passages and relaxing the muscles in the airways. It is used to prevent and treat difficulty breathing, chest tightness, coughing and wheezing caused by lung diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Some people may also use the medication to prevent breathing difficulties caused by exercising.
How is Ventolin Inhaler used?
The Ventolin Inhaler is usually taken every 4 to 6 hours or as directed by a doctor. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient's condition and their response to the therapy. Patients using the treatment to prevent bronchospasms caused by exercising should take the medication 15 to 30 minutes before exercising. Prior to the initial dose or if the device has not been used in 14 days, the inhaler will need to be primed before using. To prime the inhaler, point the nozzle away from the face and apply 4 test sprays into the air. Follow the doctor's orders to correctly administer the medication. For patients that require more than 1 spray each time, it is recommended to wait 1 minute between doses.
Adverse effects
Ventolin may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Tremors
- Nervousness
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Insomnia
- Vomiting
- Dry mouth
- Diarrhea
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Hoarseness
- Worsening of symptoms
- Irregular heartbeat
- Muscle pain
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Chest pain
- Confusion
Warnings
Keep count of the number of doses administered as the inhaler will need to be replaced after 200 doses.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Ventolin Inhaler is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
