What is Vetmedin?
Vetmedin containing the active ingredient pimobendan belongs to a group of medications called inodilators. It is used as a first line therapy in the management of certain types of congestive heart failure in dogs. It works by opening up the blood vessels that take blood away from the heart and effectively reducing work the heart does to pump blood. Increasing the ability of the heart to pump blood will help increase the quality of life and lifespan of pets.
How is Vetmedin used?
Vetmedin comes in chewable tablets and should be divided into 2 portions to be taken 12 hours apart. Follow the instructions on splitting the tablets as they should not be taken in even doses. Contact a veterinarian for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the pet’s condition, weight and response to the treatment. The 1.25mg tablet is suited for dogs that weight between 2.5 and 7.5kg.
Adverse effects
Vetmedin may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Loss of appetite
- Lethargy
- Diarrhea
- Difficulty breathing
- Weakness
- Loss of coordination
- Vomiting
- Soft stool
Contact a veterinarian should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to the veterinarian if your pet suffers an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Vetmedin is not always suitable for all animals. Always consult your veterinarian prior to using this medication if your pet is pregnant, breastfeeding, breeding, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if it has any allergies or other health problems.
