What is Vetmedin?
Vetmedin is mainly used as a first line therapy in the management of certain types of congestive heart failure in dogs. The active ingredient pimobendan is considered an inodilators type of medication. It effectively reduces the pressure on the heart to pump blood by opening the blood vessels that take blood away from the heart. Increasing the ability of the heart to pump blood can help prolong the lifespan and increase the quality of life of the pet.
How is Vetmedin used?
Vetmedin are chewable tablets that should be divided into 2 portions to be taken 12 hours apart. Follow the instructions on splitting the tablets as they are not taken in 2 even doses. Contact a veterinarian for the correct length of treatment and dosage as it will depend on the pet’s weight, condition and response to the treatment. The 5mg tablets should be taken by dogs weighting more than 10kg.
Adverse effects
Vetmedin may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Soft stools
- Vomiting
- Loss of coordination
- Weakness
- Difficulty breathing
- Diarrhea
- Lethargy
- Loss of appetite
Contact a veterinarian immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to the veterinarian if your pet suffers an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Vetmedin is not always suitable for all animals. Always consult your veterinarian prior to using this medication if your pet is pregnant, breastfeeding, breeding, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if it has any allergies or other health problems.
