What is Vetoryl?
Vetoryl containing the active ingredient trilostane is considered a 3-β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase inhibitor type of medication. The medication is used in the treatment of hyperadrenocorticism, also known as Cushing’s disease in dogs. It works by controlling the adrenal gland’s excess production of the hormone cortisol from being released into the bloodstream during times of stress.
How is Vetoryl used?
Vetoryl is usually given to the pet once per day or as directed by a veterinarian. Clinical trials have shown the medication works best when taken in the morning along with some food. Contact a veterinarian for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the pet’s weight, condition and their response to the therapy. The capsules should be given whole and not split, divided or crushed prior to consumption. In most cases, the therapy will need to be continued for the duration of the dog’s lifespan.
Adverse effects
Pets given Vetoryl may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Decrease in appetite
- Lethargy
- Depression
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
Contact a veterinarian immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to the veterinarian if your pet suffers an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Vetoryl is not always suitable for all animals. Always consult your veterinarian prior to using this medication if your pet is pregnant, breastfeeding, breeding, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if it has any allergies or other health problems.
