What is Vetsulin?
Vetsulin is used to treat diabetes in dogs and cats. It containss form of porcine insulin, which shares the identical amino acid sequence to canine insulin. One vial contains 10mL of 40IU/mL porcine insulin.
How is Vetuslin used?
Vetsulin should be injected using a U-40 syringe. The syring type is important to ensure the correct dosage is given.
Prior to use, the vial should be stored upright.
Make sure the suspension hhas been well shaken, and the suspension becomes a milky consistency without clumping before injecting.
A starting dosage is 0.5IU of insulin per kg of body weight is usually given for dogs. For cats, a starting does of 1-2IU per injection (twice daily) is given.
Warnings
Animals with a pork allergy should not be given Vetsulin.
Vetsulin is for treatment of diabetes in dogs and cats only. It is not a treatment for diabetes in humans.
The pets veterinarian should perform regular blood tests to check glucose levels. This will make sure the dosage can be altered as needed. Overdosage can result in hypoglycemia and death in severe cases. |
