What is Virovir?
Virovir containing the active ingredient famciclovir is considered an antiviral type of medication. The medication works by preventing certain viruses from reproducing and multiplying to allow the immune system to fight off the infection. It can be used to treat outbreaks caused by two common viruses called herpes simplex and herpes zoster. The tablets can help treat shingles, cold sores around the mouth and anus as well as genital herpes.
How is Virovir used?
Virovir is usually taken orally 2 to 3 times per day or as otherwise directed by a doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with plenty of water throughout the treatment. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the type of infection and the patient’s response to the therapy. Do not discontinue the treatment until the prescribed amount is completed as abruptly stopping the medication can cause the infection to return and become harder to treat.
Adverse effects
Patients using Virovir may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Stomach pain
- Jaundice
- Sleeping disorders
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Virovir is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
