What is Wellbutrin?
Wellbutrin containing the active ingredient bupropion hydrochloride is an antidepressant. It works by increasing certain natural substances produced by the body to maintain mental balance. It is used to treat major depressive disorder and seasonal affective disorders. Some people may also use the medication to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or as a smoking cessation aid.
How is Wellbutrin used?
Wellbutrin is usually taken orally 3 to 4 times daily or as directed by a doctor. To prevent an upset stomach, the tablets should be taken with food along with some water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the medication. It is not recommended to take more than 450mg in a 24 hour period. Do not discontinue the treatment without consulting a doctor as abruptly stopping the medication may cause a relapse in the patient’s condition.
Adverse effects
Patients using Wellbutrin may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Dry mouth
- Headaches
- Constipation
- Dizziness
- Excessive sweating
- Joint pain
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Irregular heartbeat
- Chest pain
- Seizures
- Confusion
- Hallucinations
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Vision or hearing problems
- Unusual weight gain or loss
Warnings
The medication may cause a false positive on some drug tests, let any laboratory staffs know you are taking this medication.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Wellbutrin is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
