What is Xarelto?
Xarelto containing the active ingredient rivaroxaban is considered an anticoagulant type of medication. The medication is the first orally active direct factor Xa inhibitor available on the market. It works by binding to factor Xa which prevents the formation of fibrin, the essential component of blot clots forming in the body. The tablets can be used to treat and prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) from happening again after the initial treatment is completed. Some people who have had hip or knee replacement surgery of have been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (a heart rhythm disorder) may also use the medication to reduce the risk of strokes and serious blood clots.
How is Xarelto used?
Xarelto is usually taken orally 1 to 2 times per day or as otherwise directed by a doctor. The tablets can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and timeframe of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the therapy. If the patient is unable to swallow the tablets whole, it can be crushed and mixed into some water or apple puree to be consumed.
Adverse effects
Patients using Xarelto may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Headaches
- Muscle spasms or pain
- Frequent nosebleeds
- Pain in arms or legs
- Easy bleeding or bruising
- Feeling weak or fatigued
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Xarelto is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
