What is Xarelto?
Xarelto containing the active ingredient rivaroxaban is an anticoagulant that works by blocking certain proteins that cause blood clots. The medication is the first available orally active direct factor Xa inhibitor, a substance in the blood involved in the development of blood clots. It is used by patients after hip or knee replacement surgery or with a certain irregular heartbeat condition (atrial fibrillation) to prevent strokes caused by blood clots. Some patients may also use the drug to treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) and to prevent the conditions from reoccurring after the initial treatment.
How is Xarelto used?
Xarelto is usually taken orally 1 to 2 times every 24 hours or as otherwise directed by a doctor. The tablets should be taken with some food along with a glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and timeframe of treatment as it will differ based on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. If the patient cannot swallow the tablets whole, it can be crushed and mixed into some applesauce or a glass of water for consumption.
Adverse effects
Xarelto may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Feeling weak or fatigue
- Easy bleeding or bruising
- Pain in arms or legs
- Frequent nosebleeds
- Muscle spasms or pain
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Dizziness
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Xarelto is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
