What is Xarelto?
Xarelto is containing the active ingredient rivaroxaban is one of the first orally active direct factor Xa inhibitors. By blocking factor Xa, the proteins involved in the development of blood clots, the medication can be used to treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE) and to prevent the blood clots from reforming. Some patients may also use the medication to prevent strokes caused by blood clots if they have atrial fibrillation (a heart rhythm disorder) or have recently undergone knee or hip replacement surgery.
How is Xarelto used?
Xarelto should be taken as directed by a doctor, usually 1 to 2 times per day. The tablets should be taken with some food along with a glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct timeframe and dosage as it will depend on the condition being treated and patient’s response to the therapy. If the patient is unable to swallow the tablets whole, it is acceptable to crush up the tablet and mix the drug into a glass of water or some apple puree for consumption.
Adverse effects
Xarelto may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Frequent nosebleeds
- Muscle spasms or pain
- Pain in arms or legs
- Headaches
- Easy bleeding or bruising
- Nausea
- Feeling weak or fatigued
- Dizziness
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Xarelto is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
