What is Xenical?
Xenical should be used in combination with a low calorie, low fat diet and a proper exercise program to assist in weight loss. The active ingredient orlistat is considered a lipase inhibitory type of medication. The medication can block enzymes in the body that break down fats in the diet and allow the undigested fat to be passed through the body via normal bowel movements. Reducing calorie intake and proper weight control can help prevent a variety of conditions such as heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes. Taking this medication regularly can also help prevent any rebound weight gain and maintain the weight loss.
How is Xenical used?
Xenical should only be used as directed by a doctor, usually 3 times per day. The capsules are usually taken within 1 hour after consuming a meal along with a full glass of water. Should you skip a meal or the meal does not contain any fat, skip the recommended dose for that meal. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy.
Adverse effects
Xenical may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Rectal pain
- Gas with discharge
- Diarrhea
- Headaches
- Poor bowel control
- Urgent and increased number of bowel movements
- Oily spotting
- Oily or fatty stools
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Dark colored urine
- Jaundice
- Pain in upper right section of the stomach
- Loss of appetite
- Excessive fatigue
- Severe stomach pain
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Xenical is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
