What is Zantac?
Zantac containing the active ingredient ranitidine hydrochloride belongs to a class of medication called histamine 2 blockers. It works by reducing the amount of acid being produced in the stomach. The medication can be used to treat ulcers of the stomach and intestines while also preventing them from returning after treatment. It can also be used to treat a condition which backward flow of acid from the stomach cause heartburn called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a condition in which the stomach produces too much acid.
How is Zantac used?
Zantac is usually taken 1 to 2 times per day or as directed by a doctor. To prevent the symptoms, the tablets should be taken 30 to 60 minutes before consuming foods that can cause heartburn. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the medication. The medication should not be taken for longer than 2 weeks unless directed by a doctor.
Adverse effects
Patients using Zantac may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Drowsiness
- Stomach pain
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Decreased sex drive or performances
- Blurred vision
- Irregular heartbeat
- Easy bruising or bleeding
- Enlarged breasts (in men)
- Signs of infection
- Jaundice
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Zantac is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
